What Makes a Space Sacred?
...a favourite old recording above and a new re-write below...
What makes a space sacred?
What makes a space, makes a place sacred?
Is it the location? The intention behind its creation?
The visible touch of a human hand...or lack thereof?
Is it the incense or the candles or the birdsong or the stillness?
Or is it something else? Something less tangible, and more... felt?
Perhaps it is the people or their practices, the way the light shines through the windows in the mornings, or the sound of a trickling fountain.
Could it be that unseen presence that expands into every corner, every alcove, every niche?
Or maybe it’s those feelings of peace or ease or grace or awe that envelope you upon arriving there?
Whatever it is, wherever it is, there will always be a Knowing - not a feeling or a thought, but a bodily Knowing - that this place is different.
We may feel a slight tug on an invisible string, an intuitive push, or a gentle tapping on some hidden internal window.
These feelings are signals, telling us; “If you enter here, spend time here, you are offering yourself up in surrender to the Mystery.
These spaces will move you.
Maybe just for an hour or a day, but maybe more.
Maybe you will return again and again, going deeper, leaning in, allowing that piece to permeate your entire existence.
Looking behind you, you may notice a subtle tracking out of that peace into your life.
Little imprints left everywhere you go.
This is the true magic of a sacred space,
that it leads us into a life where all spaces,
all places
are sacred.
